A Review on Novel Natural Polymers Used in Fast Dissolving Tablets

The oral route is often considered one of the most effective, convenient, and safe methods for drug administration. In recent years, Fast-Dissolving Tablets (FDTs) have gained popularity due to their ability to quickly dissolve in the mouth without the need for water. This innovation is especially helpful for individuals who have difficulty swallowing, including both elderly and pediatric patients. Natural polymers have emerged as preferred excipients in these formulations because they are abundant, cost-effective, non-toxic, biodegradable, and chemically stable. Unlike synthetic polymers, natural ones tend to be safer and are less likely to cause adverse effects. Studies have shown that they can improve the performance of drug formulations by acting as binders, fillers, and disintegrants. Additionally, they enlarge the solubility of poorly water-soluble drugs, downturn disintegration time, and support nutritional nutriment. This review focuses on the latest applications of natural polymers such as Rosin, Chitosan, and Pullulan in the development of fast-dissolving pellets.
