Voice-Controlled Home Automation with ESP32: A Systematic Review of IoT-Based Solutions

The field of smart home automation has experienced significant advancements, particularly with the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and voice-controlled interfaces. Among these developments, the ESP32 microcontroller has emerged as a pivotal component due to its affordability, dual-core processing, robust wireless connectivity, and compatibility with speech recognition frameworks. This systematic review critically examines the evolution of voice-activated smart home systems leveraging ESP32, synthesizing insights from peer-reviewed research, industrial case studies, and open-source implementations.
The primary objective of this review is to provide a comprehensive analysis of ESP32-based IoT architectures that enable voice command processing and device orchestration. Key focus areas include system design patterns, integration with commercial and open-source voice platforms (e.g., Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa), as well as the unique challenges related to privacy, security, and interoperability in wireless environments. The review also highlights the growing trend toward local speech recognition models, which mitigate data privacy concerns associated with cloud-based processing.
Furthermore, the study presents a comparative evaluation of performance metrics, energy efficiency, and scalability across various implementations. By consolidating these findings, the review elucidates the technological landscape and practical implications of ESP32-driven voice automation systems. It identifies persistent challenges such as real-time responsiveness and platform fragmentation, and proposes actionable insights to guide researchers, developers, and practitioners in designing secure, adaptive, and user-centric smart home environments.
