Abstract

Technological advancements are significantly narrowing the communication gap for individuals with hearing impairments. This survey delves into these innovations, focusing on Sign Language Recognition (SLR) systems, wearable devices, mobile apps, and telecommunication tools, collectively enhancing communication and social inclusion.

Powered by machine learning, SLR systems can translate sign language into spoken language or text in real-time. This development fosters seamless interactions by allowing those who are deaf or hard of hearing to communicate more effectively with those who do not understand sign language. Wearable devices, such as intelligent gloves and augmented reality glasses, further enhance this communication by directly providing the user with real-time sign language translation and other assistive functions.

Mobile applications are crucial in bridging social divides by offering communication and social interaction platforms. These apps can convert spoken language into text or sign language, enabling more accessible and fluid communication. Telecommunication tools, including video relay and captioned telephone services, also support real-time communication for individuals with hearing impairments.

Despite these advancements, challenges remain. Issues such as the accuracy of SLR systems, the accessibility and affordability of wearable devices, and the need for widespread adoption of mobile apps and telecommunication tools must be addressed. Additionally, there is a continuous need for user-friendly interfaces and culturally sensitive solutions that respect the nuances of sign language and the deaf community.

By critically evaluating these technologies, this survey aims to provide researchers, practitioners, and policymakers with insights to enhance these tools. Improved communication outcomes and increased inclusivity can enrich lives and help break down communication barriers for the deaf community.
