A Study on Side-Channel Attack Countermeasures in IoT Security using VHDL Programming

With billions of devices connected across various domains, the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem is growing rapidly. In addition to providing previously unheard-of levels of efficiency and ease, this interconnection also fosters security flaws. Side-Channel Attacks (SCAs) are among the most significant threats, particularly as they target the cryptographic implementations that underpin the security of the IoT. SCAs expose sensitive information, including secret keys, by taking advantage of leaks from the actual operation of cryptographic algorithms, such as power usage, timing errors, and electromagnetic radiation. One possible strategy for defending IoT devices against SCAs is to use hardware description languages like VHDL to incorporate countermeasures straight into the hardware architecture. The application of VHDL programming to SCA countermeasures in IoT security is examined in this study. Cryptographic methods are frequently used by IoT devices for data integrity, encryption, and authentication. However, if an algorithm’s implementation exposes details about its internal workings, even mathematically sound cryptographic algorithms may be susceptible to SCAs. A power analysis attack, for instance, allows a hacker to track a device’s power usage as it runs a cryptographic algorithm. The security of the device is ultimately jeopardised since the attacker can infer details about the important bits being processed by examining the patterns of power usage.
