This study investigates the impact of AI education and training on small businesses across eight East African nations, gathering data from 160 business owners to evaluate improvements in operational efficiency, market competitiveness, and innovation. Results show significant disparities in AI adoption, with Kenya (35%) and Rwanda (15%) leading and reporting notable improvements, while Burundi (10%) faces challenges due to high training costs. Localized, industry-specific AI training is crucial, as demonstrated by Kenya's enhanced innovation and competitiveness following tailored programs. The study highlights that high training costs and infrastructure deficits hinder progress in countries like Burundi and South Sudan. Policymakers should focus on reducing training costs, enhancing digital infrastructure, and developing localized AI training programs to meet the specific needs of East African small businesses, fostering broader AI adoption and maximizing its benefits.
