A Pre-Experimental Study to Evaluate the Effectiveness of a Structured Teaching Program on Knowledge and Skills Regarding Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Among Soap Factory Workers at Sulthan Bathery, Wayanad

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a vital life-saving procedure that significantly improves survival during cardiac emergencies; however, knowledge and skill among non-medical individuals remain inadequate. The present study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a structured teaching programme on knowledge and skill regarding CPR among soap factory workers at Sulthan Bathery, Wayanad. The objectives were to assess pre-test knowledge and skill, evaluate the effectiveness of the structured teaching programme, determine the relationship between post-test knowledge and skill scores, and find the association between pre-test knowledge and selected demographic variables. A quantitative research approach with a pre-experimental one-group pre-test post-test design was adopted. A total of 60 soap factory workers were selected using convenience sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and rating scale, followed by administration of a structured teaching programme. Descriptive and inferential statistics, including paired t-test, chi-square test, and Karl Pearson correlation coefficient, were used for analysis. The results revealed that the mean pre-test knowledge score (4.01±1.56) increased significantly to the post-test score (8.01±1.57) with t=17.70 (p<0.05). Similarly, skill scores improved from a pre-test mean of 0 to a post-test mean of 39.17±7.87 with t=38.38 (p<0.05). A strong positive correlation (r=0.7) was observed between post-test knowledge and skill scores. No significant association was found between pre-test knowledge and selected demographic variables. The findings indicate that the structured teaching programme was highly effective in improving knowledge and skill regarding CPR among soap factory workers. The study concludes that such educational interventions are essential to enhance emergency preparedness and reduce mortality due to cardiac arrest.
