A Study to Assess the Efficacy of Preoperative Teaching Programme on Knowledge Regarding Post-Operative Exercises for the Prevention of Complications Among Patients Undergoing Abdominal Surgeries in Selected Hospitals at Salem

Background: Post-operative treatment can include the following: Flexible exercise to improve the range of movement and exercises to strengthen muscles. Post-operative physiotherapy aims to obtain a patient who has undergone surgery and vice versa at his usual level of operation. A physiotherapist will help the patient who needs post-operative PT to cope with pain, restore muscles and strength and stability of joints, and provide general assistance in his recovery. Aim: This study aimed to assess the efficacy of a preoperative education program on post-operative exercise knowledge to prevent complications in patients undergoing abdominal surgery at selected hospitals in Salem. Design: Pre-experimental: one group pre-test – post-test design. Results: Pretest 16(40%) participants were having Inadequate knowledge, 24(60%) participants were having moderate knowledge, 0(00%) participants were having Adequate knowledge. The post-test result shows that the majority of participants, 31(77.5%), had Adequate knowledge, 9(22.5%) had moderate knowledge, and 0(00%) participants had Inadequate knowledge. The effectiveness of the planned teaching program in increasing the level of knowledge was shown in the obtained t-test for the level of knowledge; the calculated t-value was (-19.50), and the tabulated t-value was 2.02. So, this shows a very high significance to p<0.05 level.
