Abstract

This study, conducted at a tertiary care hospital in Bangalore, explores the perceived needs of spouses of critically ill patients to understand their specific requirements when their loved ones are in critical care units. The primary objective was to identify and evaluate the essential needs perceived by these spouses, recognizing that unmet needs can exacerbate stress and impact the patient and their family. Utilizing a descriptive research design with purposive sampling, 63 spouses of critically ill patients participated. Data were collected using the Critical Care Family Needs Inventory (CCFNI) Scale. Analysis revealed that the most crucial needs included understanding the medical treatment their loved ones were receiving and the necessity of daily communication with doctors. Conversely, the need for encouragement to express emotions, such as crying, was deemed less critical. The findings highlight the importance of addressing spouses' emotional and informational needs to mitigate stress and improve the overall care experience in critical care settings. Healthcare providers must engage more effectively with the families of critically ill patients to foster a supportive environment conducive to both patient and family well being.
