Abstract

Background: Cancer of the head of the pancreas is a serious illness and is especially difficult to treat in older people. Many elderly patients have other health problems and lower physical strength, which makes both diagnosis and treatment more challenging. Because early symptoms are often mild or unclear, the disease is usually detected at a later stage. This case report explains the symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery of an elderly patient with pancreatic head cancer who was treated successfully with surgery.

Case Presentation: A 69-year-old retired man came to the hospital with ongoing upper abdominal pain for two months and yellowing of the eyes and skin for the past 15 days. After clinical examination and imaging tests, doctors found a growth in the head of the pancreas. Since the cancer was still operable and the patient did not have major long-term illnesses, a Whipple procedure (pancreaticoduodenectomy) was planned and performed. The surgery was successful, and the patient recovered steadily without major complications. The patient was discharged in stable condition on the 16th day after surgery.

Conclusion: This case shows that major pancreatic surgery can be safely performed in selected elderly patients when careful assessment and team-based care are provided. Early diagnosis and coordinated medical management play an important role in achieving good outcomes, even in older age.
