Abstract

The current demographic change, known as "population ageing," poses new challenges for older people and their families. These challenges are likely to arise in areas such as the Use and Provision of Health Services and Resources, The Organization and Financing of Social Services, Family Care for Older People, Social Support, Age Compliance, and Income Support for Older People. Globally, many Low- and Middle-Income Countries have a growing elderly population due to increasing life expectancy. This study is aimed at looking at the Attitude of the Younger Generation of People towards the Aged in Otuoke, Bayelsa State, in Southern Nigeria. The theoretical framework that guided the study was drawn from the social identity theory. The study adopted a mixed research design i.e. both questionnaire and in-depth interview methods were used in the data collection. The simple randomization was used for the general population, while purposive sampling was used to carefully select some numbers of older people for this study. The study population was 98,000, while the sample constituted 105 respondents. The results showed that there is a notable split in perceptions regarding how older adults' health affects societal attitudes, with similar proportions feeling positively and negatively. Secondly, majority of the respondents believe that societal expectations around health and wellness significantly impact on the perception and treatment of older adults. In conclusion, the study underscores the complex interplay between social support, age-related attitudes, and mental health. It emphasizes the necessity for tailored support systems that align with the specific needs of older adults and highlights the broader implications of ageism in society. The research findings advocate for a proactive approach in addressing these challenges to improve the well-being of older individuals in the community.
