Abstract

Geriatric care focuses on providing tailored support to the elderly, aiming to enhance their health and well-being. This type of care plays a crucial role in the management, treatment, and prevention of various health issues, including fall prevention, safe medication practices, and mental health maintenance. By doing so, it significantly improves the quality of life and promotes greater self-sufficiency among older adults. A primary goal of geriatric care is to elevate the living standards of elderly patients, addressing both their physical and psychological needs. This comprehensive approach not only enhances their quality of life but also encourages active participation in a range of activities. Whether the emphasis is on preventive measures, chronic illness management, fall prevention, or providing emotional support, geriatric care is vital in helping seniors lead long, healthy lives while preserving their dignity as they age. As India progresses towards equitable healthcare access, the forthcoming Budget 2025 is particularly important for senior citizens. The Association of Senior Living India (ASLI) advocates for the Budget to act as a transformative force in developing an inclusive healthcare system that meets the specific requirements of the elderly. Allocating funds for the establishment of geriatric wards in public hospitals, providing specialized training for healthcare professionals, and offering incentives for private entities to create senior-friendly healthcare facilities will significantly strengthen the healthcare framework. With over 138 million individuals aged 60 and above in India, the healthcare needs of this demographic are diverse, encompassing physical and mental health, preventive care, chronic disease management, and personalized services such as assisted living, all aimed at ensuring a high quality of life.
