Abstract

Introduction: Substance abuse among school children is a significant public health concern in India. Early exposure to addictive substances can adversely affect academic performance, mental health and behavior. Educating adolescents about the risks and consequences of substance use is crucial for prevention.

Substance abuse among school-age children is a complex issue that requires a comprehensive approach. This study highlights the importance of education, preventions, and early intervention in addressing substance abuse in schools. It also emphasizes the need for collaboration among educators, parents, and healthcare professionals to provide support and resources for students struggling with substance abuse.

Materials and Methods: A non-experimental descriptive study design was used. A total of 100 schoolchildren from 8th, 9th, and 10th standards in a selected school of Ernakulam district were selected using a non-probability, convenience sampling technique. A structured knowledge questionnaire was used to collect data. The tool’s reliability was ensured with a test-retest method (r = 0.94), and its Content Validity Index (CVI) was 1.

Results: Out of 100 participants, 64% were males and 36% were females. The knowledge assessment revealed that 17% had excellent knowledge, 59% had good knowledge, 16% had satisfactory knowledge, 7% had poor knowledge, and 1% had very poor knowledge regarding substance abuse. High awareness was noted on the meaning of substance abuse (92%), common substances (83%), and common age of initiation (89%). However, gaps existed in awareness of the legal consequences and the deeper health impacts.

Discussion: Substance abuse among school-age children is a complex issue that requires a comprehensive approach. This study highlights the importance of education, preventions, and early intervention in addressing substance abuse in schools. It also emphasizes the need for collaboration among educators, parents, and healthcare professionals to provide support and resources for students struggling with substance abuse.
