Abstract

Background: Renal stone disease remains a prevalent issue globally, with recurrence rates between 26% and 53% over ten years. It is often associated with metabolic imbalances, yet comprehensive evaluations are infrequently conducted. Specific climates and ethnic backgrounds influence the type and frequency of kidney stones, with higher rates observed in South and Southeast Asia. Objective: This study aimed to assess the baseline knowledge of nursing students regarding renal stones and evaluate the effectiveness of a pamphlet designed to improve their understanding. Methods: A quasi-experimental design (one group pre-test, post-test) was adopted. Fifty final-year General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) students from a nursing college in Bangalore participated. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire before and after administering the pamphlet. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for analysis. Results: Pre-test results showed that 32% of students had inadequate knowledge, while 68% demonstrated a moderate level. Post-intervention, 88% achieved adequate knowledge levels. The paired t-test indicated a statistically significant improvement (p<0.05). Gender, type of family, and prior exposure to related programs were significantly associated with knowledge levels. Conclusion: The pamphlet proved to be an effective educational tool in enhancing awareness and knowledge regarding renal stones and their prevention among nursing students.
