Background: The global HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to challenge healthcare systems, particularly in culturally complex and resource-limited regions like Lanao del Sur, Philippines. Despite their pivotal role, the lived experiences of nurses providing HIV/AIDS care remain largely undocumented. This study explores how nurses navigate cultural, emotional, and systemic demands in delivering care within this unique socio-cultural context.
Methods: A qualitative, phenomenological design was used. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five registered nurses providing HIV care in Lanao del Sur, selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed thematically using Colaizzi’s method to identify recurring patterns and meanings.
Results: Six key themes emerged: (1) influence of demographics and professional roles showed how age, experience, and emotional resilience shaped care approaches; (2) cultural Sensitivity in Nursing highlighted challenges with stigma, communication, and gender dynamics; (3) challenges of caring for HIV/AIDS patients included emotional strain, disclosure issues, and limited resources; (4) cultivating connections emphasized trust-building and emotional labor; (5) Cultural Currents revealed how religion, gossip, and socioeconomic status affected care; (6) best practices in culturally sensitive care included strategies such as holistic care, education, and stigma reduction.
Conclusion: Nurses in Lanao del Sur face complex emotional and cultural challenges in HIV care, yet demonstrate resilience and dedication. Their narratives underscore the urgent need for culturally sensitive training, systemic support, and policies that enhance patient outcomes and nurse well-being in similar contexts.
