Aims & Objectives: The research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a competency-based training program on clinical nursing skills among final-year student nurses studying in selected nursing colleges at Mysore. Methods: A quasi-experimental, non-equivalent control group research design was adopted for this study. The study samples include 80 student nurses allotted using a simple random sampling technique. 40 in the experimental and 40 in the control group were allotted. Data was collected using a demographic data sheet and clinical nursing skills situational judgment test. Pre-assessment of clinical nursing skills is done for both groups. Later, for the experimental group, competency-based training was conducted for five core competencies for 5 sessions. Finally, the post-assessment of clinical nursing skills was done for both groups. Results: The result significantly differed between the experimental group's pre-test and post-test clinical nursing skills. Instead, it was not observed in the control group. The comparison between the mean post-test scores of the experimental and control groups showed a significant difference, which inferred that a competency-based training program is efficacious in improving clinical nursing skills. There was no significant association between the pre-test clinical nursing skills and selected demographic variables. Interpretation and Conclusion: Based on the above findings, it is inferred that a competency-based training program is very effective in improving clinical nursing skills.
