Abstract

Suicide is death caused by self-injury with the desire to die. Every suicide is a tragedy that has an aftereffect on those left behind and has an impact on families, communities, and even entire nations. Suicide affects people of all ages, and among those between the ages of 15 and 29, it was the second leading cause of death. The number of teenage and young adult suicides that have been documented has dramatically increased. In recent years, there have been more visible incidents of nursing students in their first Year of study committing suicide due to the mental stress, frustration, and workload that they are not used to dealing with. This research aims to 'evaluate the efficiency of a self-instructional module on knowledge regarding suicidal prevention among first-year BSc nursing students at selected nursing colleges in Mangaluru.' "A quasi-experimental one-group pre-test and post-test research design were employed for the study. A convenient sampling technique was used to select the sample. Data from 90 1st B.Sc. nursing students were gathered. Self-Structured Questionnaires tool was developed to assess the knowledge about suicidal prevention among 1st year BSc nursing students. Then, awareness teaching was given to the students, and after 7 days, a post-test was done to assess the effectiveness of suicidal prevention among them. The study found that in the pre-test, 53 (59%) subjects had moderate knowledge with a total mean and SD of 11.67±2.7, and in the post-test, 78 (86.6%) had adequate knowledge on suicidal prevention with a total mean and SD of 19.46±2.85. At the 0.05 significance level, the projected "t" value of 15.6 is greater than the table value (t89=1.98). The knowledge scores from the pre-and post-tests differ significantly. The knowledge scores connected to selected demographic variables were compared and assessed statistically using the chi-square test, which revealed no significant link between pre-test knowledge scores and certain of the specified demographic variables. The study's conclusion stated that the self-instructional module was effective in increasing awareness of suicidal prevention among 1st year BSc nursing students”.
