Effectiveness of an Informational Booklet on Knowledge Regarding Risk Factors and Prevention of Diabetes Mellitus Among Sedentary Workers in Selected Customer Care Centers of Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh: A Pre-Experimental Study

Background: One of the most common non-communicable diseases in the world today is diabetes mellitus, and one of the main risk factors that can be changed is a sedentary lifestyle. Long periods of sitting are common among customer service representatives, which puts them at risk for obesity, insulin resistance, and eventually type 2 diabetes mellitus. Increasing knowledge of risk factors and preventive interventions is still a good way to lower the burden of disease.
Goals: To evaluate the efficacy of a pamphlet on diabetes mellitus risk factors and prevention among sedentary employees working in particular customer service facilities in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
Methods: A one-group pre-test and post-test quantitative pre-experimental research design was used. Non-probability convenience sampling was used to choose sixty sedentary workers. An information pamphlet was distributed after a validated structured questionnaire was used to measure baseline knowledge. The same instrument was used for a post-test assessment following the intervention. The data were analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics.
Results: Participants' understanding of diabetes mellitus improved statistically significantly as a result of the intervention. The usefulness of the instructional booklet was demonstrated by the significantly higher post-test mean knowledge scores compared to pre-test scores. Additionally, significant correlations between baseline knowledge levels and specific demographic characteristics were found.
In conclusion, the information booklet worked well as an educational intervention to increase sedentary workers' understanding of diabetes mellitus risk factors and preventative strategies. Frequent workplace-based health education initiatives may help employees with sedentary jobs lead better lifestyles and lessen the burden of diabetes in the future.
