Abstract

This paper aims to find the best mold material from a range of metals which is to be used in the injection molding process of reprocessed HDPE. Protective caps for yarn cones are produced via the injection molding process, which is used to avoid damage during transportation. The parameters considered for the comparison of mold materials include estimated lifespan, machinability index, corrosion resistance, density, and cost. The mold materials that are considered for comparison are P20, H13, 1.2083, 718H, 1.2738 and NAK80, 4140 and S7 steels. To select the best materials based on ranking of the parameters under consideration, DEAR algorithm is used. The DEAR Algorithm is a quantitative technique that ranks several alternatives into MRPI. The two materials that comes out top were considered for thermal analysis in order to analyse and compare thermal fatigue during the process cycle time of the reprocessed HDPE. Final results shows that DEAR algorithm can be effectively used to select the best material.
