Abstract

Itahari is one of the major trade centers of Eastern Nepal. Tarahara Chowk plays a pivotal role in joining two major cities Dharan and Itahari. The primary reason for conducting this research is the rising number of vehicles in pivotal trade routes daily. This study aims to examine the capacity and Level of Service (LOS) at this three-legged intersection. The PCUs are taken from Nepal Road Standard 2070 and the manual calculation is done according to the Indo Highway Capacity Manual (Indo HCM) 2017. A three-day video-graphic survey was carried out to determine the average peak-hour traffic volume and geometrical features of the intersection. The capacity of each turning movement at the intersection is computed from the critical gap values by multiplying various adjustment factors. The saturation flow (V/C) ratio is used to determine the Level of Service of the intersection as per Indo HCM, resulting in LOS for morning and evening peak hour flow being “A”.
