Metro rail projects play a pivotal role in improving urban mobility, reducing traffic congestion, and promoting sustainable transport in rapidly growing metropolitan cities. Despite their importance, these large-scale infrastructure projects frequently experience significant delays, which in turn result in substantial cost overruns, inconvenience to the public, and inefficiencies in urban economic systems. This research investigates the prevalent issue of delays in metro rail projects in India by systematically identifying and categorizing the underlying causes, assessing the most critical delay-inducing factors, and proposing practical mitigation strategies to minimize such occurrences in future projects. The methodology adopted in this study involves a combination of literature review, analysis of real-world case studies, and the administration of structured questionnaire surveys among industry professionals. These methods provide a robust basis for both qualitative and quantitative analysis. In the Indian context, common delay triggers include issues such as land acquisition hurdles, delays in regulatory and environmental clearances, funding challenges, manpower shortages, and lack of coordination among stakeholders. By identifying and ranking critical delay factors and correlating them with their project impacts, this research provides valuable insights for policymakers, project planners, and executing agencies. The outcome of the study contributes to the existing body of knowledge and aims to support the timely and efficient execution of metro rail infrastructure.
