The last century witnessed a global movement towards green architecture in all its aspects, conditions, and standards, aimed at preserving natural resources, reducing negative environmental impacts, and addressing climate change. This approach was integrated with the application of intelligent systems in buildings. Retrofitting existing buildings to meet green certification standards is a significant component of this movement, as it leverages existing infrastructure while minimizing waste and resource consumption. Integrating intelligent systems into retrofitting practices is one of the most promising advancements in this field. This integration facilitates compliance with green building certification criteria and enhances operational efficiency, occupant comfort, and environmental stewardship. This research explores the role of intelligent systems in retrofitting buildings to implement the Iraqi green buildings code. The renewable energy and Environment Research Center, a selected office building, was chosen as it represents one of the most prominent buildings in Iraq that relied on active cooling systems in the early eighties. The results showed that innovative systems contribute to achieving energy conservation of 40% of the building's total energy consumption. According to chapter three of the code (Energy conservation), this is employed by the Iraqi Green Building Code, using alternative energy sources (New and renewable energies) requirements and utilizing alternative energy sources, including new and renewable energies.
