As the retail industry continues to evolve, there is a growing demand for intelligent solutions that enhance the customer shopping experience while improving operational efficiency. This project introduces a smart trolley system designed to automate and simplify the traditional shopping process in supermarkets and retail stores. The system leverages a Raspberry Pi as the central processing unit, integrated with a touchscreen display, barcode scanner, and optional thermal printer.
The smart trolley enables customers to scan the barcodes of products directly while placing them in the cart. Upon scanning, product details such as name, price, and quantity are displayed in real-time on the touchscreen interface. The system maintains a running total of the bill, giving the customer full control and visibility over their shopping cart. Once shopping is complete, the system allows the customer to proceed with online payment through integrated gateways like Razorpay. After a successful transaction, the system generates a digital receipt that can be emailed, sent via SMS, or printed on the spot using a thermal printer.
This solution aims to eliminate long queues, reduce the need for manual billing, and promote cashless, contactless transactions. The project also serves as a prototype for future advancements in automated retail and smart cart technologies, and can be extended with features like RFID, inventory management, and AI-based product suggestions. A reduction in labor costs and increased operational efficiency contribute to overall cost savings for the manufacturing facility.
