Abstract

The concept of Industry 5.0 has emerged as a transformative successor to Industry 4.0, shifting the industrial paradigm from purely technology-driven automation toward a value-driven, human-centric model of manufacturing. Announced by the European Commission at the ten-year milestone of Industry 4.0, Industry 5.0 introduces three foundational pillars: sustainability, human-centricity, and resilience. Unlike its predecessor, which prioritized efficiency and automation, Industry 5.0 envisions a collaborative ecosystem where human intelligence and creativity are amplified — rather than replaced — by advanced technologies including artificial intelligence (AI), collaborative robotics (cobots), the Internet of Things (IoT), digital twins, and cyber-physical systems. This paper presents a comprehensive literature-based review of Industry 5.0, examining its conceptual origins, distinguishing it from Industry 4.0, and critically analyzing each of its three pillars. Key enabling technologies are mapped against their industrial applications, and the sociotechnical implications for workforce transformation, organizational resilience, and sustainable development goals (SDGs) are systematically discussed. The paper also identifies current research gaps and proposes future directions for advancing Industry 5.0 implementation across global manufacturing contexts. The findings indicate that realizing the full potential of Industry 5.0 requires a multi-stakeholder approach encompassing policy alignment, education reform, and responsible technology governance.
