Abstract

Ladakh’s unique agro-climatic conditions, characterized by high altitude, extreme temperatures, and a short growing season, present significant challenges to conventional agriculture, particularly for women who form the backbone of the rural workforce. Despite their central role in sustaining household food security and agricultural production, women in Ladakh have historically faced limited opportunities for economic advancement due to environmental constraints and sociocultural barriers. In recent years, mushroom cultivation has emerged as a promising, women-friendly enterprise in the region, offering nutritional, economic, and social benefits well-suited to Ladakh’s context. This study investigates the impact of mushroom cultivation on women’s economic empowerment in rural Ladakh, with a particular focus on the Kargil and Changthang regions. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research draws on field surveys, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and secondary data from local institutions and NGOs. The findings reveal that mushroom farming significantly increases women’s income, enhances their participation in household decision-making, and improves their social status within the community. Furthermore, the study identifies persistent challenges such as limited market access, input supply constraints, and sociocultural resistance, while also highlighting the effectiveness of targeted training and institutional support. Based on these insights, the paper offers policy recommendations for scaling up mushroom cultivation as a transformative livelihood option to foster sustainable economic empowerment for women in rural Ladakh.
