Abstract

The evolving landscape of mining necessitates a paradigm shift in worker communication, moving beyond traditional methods to ensure safety, efficiency, and real-time responsiveness. This research explores the transformative potential of IoT-enabled smart helmets in achieving seamless connectivity for mining personnel. By integrating sensor networks, augmented reality displays, and robust communication protocols into a single wearable device, we investigate how these helmets can facilitate contextualized information sharing, proactive hazard alerts, and dynamic task management. This study diverges from existing research by focusing on the holistic integration of these technologies, analyzing the impact on worker cognition and collaborative decision-making within the inherently challenging mining environment. Through a combination of simulated and field-based evaluations, we assess the efficacy of this smart helmet system in enhancing situational awareness, reducing communication latency, and fostering a safer, more connected future for mining workers. This research ultimately aims to demonstrate the viability of a truly integrated, worker-centric communication ecosystem, paving the way for a new era of intelligent mining operations.
