Impact of Algorithmic Control on the Gig Economy: An Organizational Perspective

While digital labor and platforms have brought flexibility and autonomy to the gig economy, they have also raised concerns about algorithmic control among workers. This review examines the various aspects of gig work and the impacts of algorithmic control. It highlights research gaps, such as the lack of research on regional disparities, health risks, job security, and social vulnerabilities among workers, and the dynamics of the gig economy driven by neoliberal policies. This review uses a theory-based approach to data analysis. The results highlight the dual impact of algorithmic control on platforms. In addition, the skills and reputation of the platform are crucial for improving job quality and bargaining power. This review calls for policies and models to improve the working environment in the gig economy and ensure that workers have fair rights under labor laws. It discusses extensively to fill the gaps in its research so that the quality of the gig economy can be further improved.
