Abstract

This paper describes the design and development of an affordable real-time air quality monitoring and control system based on the Internet of Things (IoT). The system integrates multiple sensors to continuously track air pollutants and environmental conditions. At its core, an ESP8266 (NodeMCU) microcontroller processes sensor data and enables Wi-Fi connectivity for cloud-based monitoring. The DHT22 sensor measures temperature and humidity, while MQ135 detects air pollutants, MQ2 monitors combustible gases, and PM2.5 (DMS501A) measures fine particulate matter concentrations. Unlike conventional air monitoring systems that solely collect and display data, the proposed system features an automated control mechanism. When pollution levels exceed predefined thresholds, the system activates an air purifier to reduce airborne contaminants and a DC 5V humidifier (USB spray module 108kHz) to regulate indoor humidity. The acquired data is transmitted to Thinger.io, a cloud-based IoT platform, enabling real-time visualization, remote access, and historical analysis. Additionally, the system calculates a localized Air Quality Index (AQI) specific to Anantapur, providing a more relevant assessment of air pollution levels. The integration of multi-sensor fusion, cloud-based real-time monitoring, and automated air quality control makes this system more efficient, responsive, and accessible compared to existing models.
