Abstract

In higher education institutions, e-learning has grown in popularity. Several instructional technologies are available for course delivery, but e-learning is one of the most widely used. Therefore, to investigate the efficacy of such offerings, educators must research students' perceptions of e-learning. The paper aims to provide research done at an Indonesian private institution where students were introduced to e-learning from the start of their studies. To assess students' receptiveness to e-learning, a survey of students' attitudes toward it was required to be evaluated. The study used interviews, observations, and online focus groups to characterize undergraduate students' experiences with and perceptions of online courses. We discuss the following topics: (a) learner characteristics and motivation in online courses; (b) the advantages and disadvantages of online learning as perceived by students; (c) strategies that instructors can implement to enhance their instruction; and (d) how undergraduate students' opinions of the online learning environment and the resources available influence their choice of learning style. Five main conclusions were drawn from the data analysis for the four research topics in this study.
