Embedded finance refers to the integration of payment, lending, insurance, banking and investment capabilities directly into the digital products of non-financial businesses. Rather than requiring customers to visit a separate financial institution, embedded finance makes financial services a native part of an existing digital journey. This article reviews the conceptual foundations, evolution, service categories, value-chain structure, sectoral applications, enabling technologies, market drivers, risks, and future direction of embedded finance. The review highlights the role of application programming interfaces, cloud infrastructure, Banking-as-a-Service platforms, open banking, and real-time payment systems in enabling contextual financial services. Embedded payments remain the most developed category, while lending, insurance, banking, and investment services are expanding across retail, software, mobility, logistics, and healthcare. The model can improve customer convenience, support alternative-data-based underwriting, create new revenue opportunities for platforms and extend financial access. At the same time, the diffusion of regulated financial activity across non-financial platforms creates challenges related to liability, licensing, consumer protection, privacy and cybersecurity. The article concludes that embedded finance is evolving from an emerging distribution mechanism into an important architecture for digital financial services, with artificial intelligence and open finance expected to accelerate this transition.
