The review discusses the different medicinal applications of Curcuma longa (Turmeric) and its active ingredient, curcumin. Rhizome juice and powder are used to treat skin problems due to their anti-parasitic effects, whilst the leaves have strong anti-fungal capabilities against human pathogenic fungi. Curcumin is renowned for its anti-mutagenic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-carcinogenic effects, which protect against UV-induced skin damage. In pregnancy and neonates, C. longa and curcumin have been demonstrated to raise hepatic enzyme levels, indicating that transmission may occur through breast milk. Animal studies have shown that C. longa and curcumin are safe during pregnancy, but further human study is needed.
Furthermore, C. longa essential oil and extracts are antibacterial against various bacteria, fungi, and parasites. Curcumin has antibacterial action against multiple strains, with synergistic effects shown when coupled with antibiotics or other treatments. Furthermore, research has examined using C. longa to combat multidrug-resistant infections and boost antibacterial efficacy. Overall, the findings highlight the varied therapeutic potentials of C. longa and curcumin in fighting microbial infections and promoting skin health.
