Abstract

Spirulina, often termed arthrospira platensis, is a blue-green algae consumed as a nutritional supplement and used as space food widely consumed by astronauts. Belonging to the family, Oscillatoriaceae grows naturally in seas, lakes, and water. The blue-green algae are Phyto organisms that convert light energy from the sun into chemical energy & have many nutritional properties such as high protein content, antioxidants, anticancer, appetite stimulant, antiviral, rich in vitamins, minerals, essential amino acid, protein, fats. Beyond this, it contains a high level of vitamins, especially B12, B1, and B2, a high source of beta-carotene, iron, phosphorus, and calcium. This review article provides an overview of why spirulina is regarded as a "superfood" and, at the same time, throws light on its health benefits. The remarkable benefits of Spirulina deserve a closer look at its properties.
