Abstract

The dramatic increase in screen media exposure among children has prompted concerns about its influence on developmental outcomes. This review examines the cognitive and behavioral consequences of screen time in early and middle childhood. Findings from empirical studies highlight associations between excessive screen use and delayed language acquisition, impaired attention, behavioral dysregulation, and social-emotional issues. While some screen use can be beneficial particularly high-quality, co-viewed, educational content unregulated and prolonged exposure poses risks to healthy development. This review underscores the need for evidence-based screen time recommendations and greater caregiver awareness.
