Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a significant respiratory pathogen globally, causing a substantial burden of acute respiratory infections (ARIs). Since its discovery in 2001, hMPV has been recognized as a major cause of respiratory illness in infants, young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. While its symptoms often mimic other viral infections, ranging from mild to severe, hMPV's impact on public health remains a significant concern, particularly due to the lack of licensed vaccines or specific antiviral treatments. This article will explain current outbreaks, advancements in research, and the ongoing public health challenges hMPV poses.
