All human beings on this earth are born of women. Child birth is a biological function that maintains the survival of the species. Childbirth is viewed as an important life event and it refers to the normal outcome of pregnancy with the birth of an infant asserts that safe motherhood is not just about ensuring that women do not die in child birth, it is about empowering women to take control over their bodies, to enable them to achieve optimum health. Women in highly industrialized countries as well as in developing countries have derived their right to choose and exercise control over their birth processes. Women therefore want to take control of their bodies, make informed choices and feel the need to be treated as individuals and not just a body. Women throughout the ages have depended on a skilled person, usually another woman, to be with them during child birth, that person is a midwife.
