Abstract

Background: Hyoscine N-butylbromide (Buscopan) is an antispasmodic agent used to shorten the duration of labor and alleviate cervical spasms. Despite its clinical utility, limited data exist on its awareness and acceptance among pregnant women in Nigeria. This study assessed the level of awareness and acceptance of Hyoscine N-butylbromide among expectant mothers attending antenatal care at Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), Aba, Nigeria. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted between August 2024 and May 2025 among 422 antenatal attendees selected using systematic random sampling. Data were collected via a pre-tested, interviewer-administered questionnaire. Variables assessed included socio-demographics, awareness, acceptance, knowledge of benefits/risks, and the role of healthcare providers. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25.0, employing descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and Pearson correlation analysis. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: Among the respondents (n=422), 48.6% had heard of Hyoscine N-butylbromide, and 39.6% knew of its application in labor. Awareness was significantly associated with educational level (χ² = 12.84, p = 0.005). Although 73.5% expressed willingness to use the drug if recommended, fear of side effects (31.0%) was a notable deterrent. A strong positive correlation existed between counseling by healthcare workers and willingness to use the drug (r = 0.518, p < 0.001). Awareness of benefits also positively correlated with favorable attitudes (r = 0.422, p < 0.001). Conclusion: The study reveals moderate awareness but high potential acceptance of Hyoscine N-butylbromide among expectant mothers, especially when guided by healthcare providers. Fear of side effects remains a barrier. Enhanced antenatal education and provider counseling are essential to improve informed decision-making regarding labor management options.
