Barriers towards Contraceptive Use among Rural and Urban Couples in Kerala

Abstract

Family planning has well-documented health welfare for mothers, newborns, families and communities. A woman's health is negatively impacted and her risk of low birth weight is increased when she gets pregnant too early or too late in her life. A quantitative study approach has used the study to assess the barriers towards contraceptive use among rural and urban couples. The research methodology adopted for the study was descriptive comparative design. The study was conducted in selected community areas in Thiruvananthapuram District. The sample size for the study was 600 couples, 300 rural and 300 urban each. The samples were selected based on the inclusive criteria by using consecutive sampling techniques. The design used for the study was descriptive comparative research. The samples collected for the study were rural and urban couples. Sample The sample size was 600. The sampling technique used was non-non-probability consecutive sampling. The study findings revealed that there was a significant association between the barriers among rural couples with educational status, occupation, knowledge about contraceptives, presently using contraceptives, preferred contraceptive method, preference of temporary method and permanent method of contraception. There is a significant association between barriers regarding contraception among urban couples with educational status, occupation, source of knowledge about contraceptives, presently using contraception, preferred contraception, and preference for temporary and permanent methods of contraception.
