Abstract

Moringa oleifera, a widely cultivated plant in tropical and subtropical regions, has garnered attention for its nutritional and therapeutic properties. This review examines the potential of Moringa oleifera juice in managing anemia, a prevalent condition characterized by low hemoglobin levels. The plant's leaves, a key juice component, are rich in iron, essential for hemoglobin synthesis, and vitamin C, which enhances iron absorption. Additionally, Moringa oleifera contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that may mitigate oxidative stress and inflammation associated with anemia. While preliminary studies suggest promising effects on improving iron status and overall nutritional support, further clinical research is warranted to elucidate its efficacy and safety as an adjunctive therapy for anemia. Understanding the bioavailability of nutrients in Moringa oleifera and its potential interactions with conventional treatments will be crucial in harnessing its therapeutic benefits effectively. Background: Adolescence marks a critical period of growth and development, during which adequate nutrition, including sufficient iron intake, is crucial. Iron deficiency anemia is prevalent among adolescents, particularly affecting girls due to increased iron needs associated with menstruation. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Moringa oleifera juice in improving iron status among females aged 18-21 years with borderline anemia in Hassan, Karnataka. Moringa oleifera is valued for its high iron content and potential to enhance iron absorption through its vitamin C content. Its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties may also mitigate oxidative stress associated with anemia. The study will employ a randomized controlled trial design to assess changes in hemoglobin levels and iron status markers following Moringa oleifera juice supplementation over a specified period. Findings from this study could provide valuable insights into the role of Moringa oleifera as a dietary supplement in managing borderline anemia among adolescent females. Such research is essential for guiding public health interventions aimed at improving nutritional outcomes and overall health during this critical stage of development. Objectives: Assessment of Hemoglobin Levels: Determine the prevalence of borderline anemia among females aged 18-21 years in urban areas of Hassan. Preparation of Moringa oleifera Leaf Juice: Describe the standardized preparation method of Moringa oleifera leaf juice for administration to study participants. Administration Protocol: Administer 100 ml of Moringa oleifera leaf juice daily for 30 days to adolescent females identified with borderline anemia in urban areas of Hassan. Effectiveness Evaluation: Evaluate changes in hemoglobin levels and iron status markers before and after the Moringa oleifera leaf juice intervention. Association Analysis: Investigate the association between the effectiveness of Moringa oleifera leaf juice supplementation and socio-demographic variables among adolescent females with borderline anemia in urban areas of Hassan.
