Depression Among Patients with Cancer at a Tertiary Level Hospital in Bangladesh

Background: According to the World Health Organization, 19.9 million new cancer cases and almost 10 million cancer-related deaths will occur in 2022 due to cancer. Objective: The aim of the study is to assess the level of depression among cancer patients at a tertiary level hospital in Bangladesh. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 104 cancer patient who was selected from Rangpur medical college hospital, Rangpur by using convenience sampling technique. Data was collected by using self-administered questionnaires from July to September 2024. After data collection, it was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The study result revealed that the most (91.38%) of the cancer patient experienced depression. Age, religion, level of education, monthly income, place of living, and having an underlying disease were found significant association with depression. Conclusion: This study finding’s baseline data will be helpful for policy maker as well as nurse administrator to reduce cancer patient depression through counseling program not only targeted patient but also their significant others.
