Career guidance counselling is a key factor in determining the career path of students and enables them to make informed choices in various education settings. This paper is an in-depth review of the modern techniques, theoretical approaches and evidence-based practice adopted by career guidance advisors to effectively support students. The author reviews theories of counselling foundations, such as Life-Design counselling, Social Cognitive Theory of career (SCCT) and Career Construction theory, and developmental and lifespan approaches. Some of the assessment tools that are discussed in the study include interest inventories, aptitude assessments, personality assessments and situational judgment assessments that are used to inform individual guidance strategies. Several counselling formats are discussed, including personal models, teamwork, peer-led group work, and digital platforms, with a hybrid approach. Particular emphasis is put on the combination of labour market intelligence, occupational information systems and opportunity mapping required in steering students on tenable career pathways. The paper also covers program design and program evaluation techniques, equity and inclusion imperatives and the ethical and professional standards of the field. Major issues and directions in the future, especially on technology integration and systemic advocacy, are also addressed. Results highlight the need to implement holistic, culturally responsive, and evidence-based guidance practices that can equip students to handle the changing global labour market.
