Psychological Status Among Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease at Tertiary Level Hospitals in Bangladesh

Background: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is the progressive loss of renal function over a period of months or years. A global public health issue can lead to renal failure and early death. Stress, anxiety, and depression are frequent comorbidity among chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients in Bangladesh.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the level of psychological status among the patients with chronic kidney disease at tertiary level hospitals in Bangladesh.
Methods: The A cross-sectional descriptive research was carried out at the department of Nephrology in Bangladesh Medical University (BMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh. A total of 170 CKD patients were selected by convenience sampling technique, and their level of psychological status was assessed by the depression, anxiety, and stress scale (DASS-21).
Result: Data from 170 participants revealed mild to moderate depression (mean score: 2.78±.639), extremely severe anxiety (mean score 3.70±.842) and mild to moderate stress (mean score 2.36±.630).
Conclusion: A management approach for psychological symptoms in chronic kidney patients should be considered in addition to medical care, psychotherapy, and awareness raising.
