Background: Sterilization procedures are a critical aspect of clinical expertise in healthcare settings. They serve as one of the most effective and straightforward methods for preventing hospital-acquired infections. These protocols are designed to protect healthcare personnel, patients, and visitors from exposure to infectious agents. Key practices include proper hand hygiene, the use of personal protective equipment (such as gloves, gowns, and face masks), and the safe disposal of medical waste all of which are essential in minimizing the risk of infection and ensuring a safe hospital environment.
Objectives: To assess nurses' understanding of sterilization procedures and examine the relationship between their practices and demographic variables such as age, sex, education level, years of experience, and participation in training courses.
Methods: The purpose of this descriptive cross-sectional study was to assess the level of sterilization proficiency among nurses in the Coronary Care Unit of Al-Diwaniya Teaching Hospital. The study was conducted from October 1, 2024, to January 5, 2025, involving a total of 60 nurses selected through a non-probability sampling method. Data were collected to evaluate both the nurses’ demographic characteristics and their knowledge and practices related to sterilization procedures.
Results: The study found that 3.3% of the nurses demonstrated poor proficiency in sterilization procedures. Additionally, 81.7% showed a moderate level of proficiency, while 15.0% exhibited a good level of proficiency.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that nurses possess only a moderate level of proficiency in sterilization procedures, highlighting the need for additional training and continuous education to enhance their competence in infection control practices.
Recommendations: The research suggests that nurses working in the Cardiac Care Unit would benefit from additional training on proper sterilization procedures.
