Congestion has become a significant issue with the increasing population and vehicle volume.
Biratnagar, an economic hub of Nepal, is a crucial entry point from India. The Kanchanbari
intersection has been dealing with challenges such as congestion, long queues, and frequent
accidents. This critical situation needs our attention. This paper aims to optimize the intersection
using SIDRA Intersection 8.0 software. Traffic volume data was collected over 72 hours, and
geometrical characteristics were recorded manually. The model was designed for morning,
afternoon, and evening peak hours. The maximum traffic flow was in the evening from 5:45 p.m. to
6:45 p.m. A model was developed using SIDRA 8.0 to analyze the current conditions. The model
was validated to ensure accuracy by comparing the simulated queue lengths with real-time
observed data. Optimization was conducted using signal length optimization and controlled left
turn movements. Both strategies significantly reduced average delay and queue length, proving the
latter the most effective.
