Abstract

Road Traffic Accidents (RTAs) are one of the significant issues concerning road transport systems worldwide. In developing countries Like India, several injuries and deaths are caused by Road Traffic Accidents. Several factors can lead to the occurrence of these incidents. Inter and intra-level spatial and temporal variation in the occurrences of Road Traffic Accidents, fatalities, and injuries caused by the accidents. The present study aims to identify the Spatio-temporal pattern of road accidents in different parts of the Barrackpore subdivision along with several risk variables associated with human behavior and road conditions in the study area. Both field-based observation and questionnaire-based interviews have been considered for collecting accident-related data. Various scenarios of Road Traffic Accidents (RTA) and related injuries have been reflected through maps and graphical diagrams from the secondary data from the West Bengal traffic police department. The study finding shows how several structural and non-structural risk factors, like road infrastructure and pedestrian activity, are responsible for road accidents in the study area. The study finally highlights several measures to focus on for long-term policy formulation related to reducing road accidents.
