Abstract

This review examines recent advancements in smart and flexible manufacturing within the context of Industry 4.0 and 5.0. Lightweight security protocols, predictive maintenance systems, and AI-driven defect detection frameworks have been developed to enhance data security, system reliability, and operational efficiency in IIoT-enabled environments. Integration of IoT, digital twin models, virtual commissioning, and hardware-in-the-loop simulations has enabled optimized robotic operations, real-time monitoring, and process validation. Additive manufacturing, machine learning, and composite materials have been leveraged to achieve sustainable, efficient, and customized production solutions. Lean automation and reshoring strategies have improved productivity, reduced environmental impact, and supported local manufacturing capabilities. Advanced network management and scheduling algorithms, along with emerging technologies, have facilitated smart factory operations, predictive analytics, and sustainable circular economy practices, collectively advancing efficiency, resilience, and operational excellence across manufacturing and healthcare domains.
