Abstract

One of the most significant transformation processes worldwide is urbanization, which leads to development inside, outside, and beyond the Urban Local Body (ULB) boundaries. The development features outside and beyond the boundary of the Urban Local Body (ULB) in developing and developed world cities demonstrate a significant variation in their characteristics, driving forces for their outgrowth. Different identical terminologies worldwide refer to the development outside and beyond the boundary of the urban local body. There has been a lack of appropriate and precise methodology for identifying urban expansion at both the national and global levels, and so has the ambiguity of the usage of these various terminologies synonymous with the development outside and beyond the boundary of the Local Body. Clarity about parameters associated with these terminologies has been absent, too. There is a need to review these terminologies contextually on a broad basis for both developed and emerging nations.

The research intends to define the development inside, outside, and beyond the Urban Local Body (ULB) boundary and its distinct characteristics. The paper focuses on eliminating the obscurity regarding the synonymous terminologies defining the development outside and beyond the boundary of the Urban Local Body (ULB) by reviewing the global literature and providing a comprehensive summary of the qualities that distinguish them.
