The increasing focus on green buildings in India, driven by sustainability and resource efficiency, highlights the need for refining its green building rating systems. This paper explores the integration of local materials and techniques into these systems, comparing their effectiveness with international standards. Through a comprehensive literature review and expert surveys, the study identifies challenges and opportunities for enhancing sustainability in Indian green building practices. The findings emphasize the role of indigenous materials in reducing embodied energy, the need for policy support, and benefits of blending traditional construction with modern technologies. The research also identifies barriers such as high costs, logistical challenges, and a lack of post-construction performance monitoring in India. Recommendations for improving the adaptability of Indian green building rating systems are provided, focusing on addressing local environmental challenges and promoting long-term sustainability.
