Abstract

Recent developments in Free Space Optics Communication (FSOC) have significantly enhanced the capabilities of advanced communication technologies, enabling high bandwidth, high data rates, and operation within a license-free spectrum. Integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) into FSOC offers innovative solutions to address numerous challenges in this domain. These technologies enable dynamic system optimization and real-time adaptability, critical for ensuring consistent communication links. This paper focuses on the potential applications of ML and AI algorithms in improving different aspects of FSOC. Specifically, this paper surveys several areas where AI can be effectively integrated, including channel monitoring, error detection and management, and predicting and managing the Q-factor of FSO systems. By leveraging AI and ML, it is possible to enhance the reliability and performance of FSOC systems, addressing issues such as atmospheric turbulence, signal degradation, and network efficiency. The outcomes of this review will support the continued advancement of FSOC technologies, fostering the development of more resilient and efficient communication systems for diverse applications such as telecommunications, military operations, and emergency response scenarios.
