Energy-Aware Cooperative Routing in Wireless Ad Hoc Networks: Techniques, Challenges, and Future Directions

Wireless Ad Hoc Networks (WANETs) are decentralized systems characterized by dynamic topologies and limited energy resources, making energy efficiency a critical design concern. As the network nodes typically operate on battery power, prolonging the overall network lifetime becomes a primary objective. Cooperative routing has emerged as a promising approach to address this challenge by enabling nodes to assist one another in data transmission, thereby optimizing energy consumption and load distribution. This review paper provides a comprehensive analysis of energy-aware cooperative routing strategies developed to enhance the operational lifespan of WANETs. The paper explores various cooperative protocols, their working principles, and the energy-centric metrics used to evaluate their effectiveness. Key challenges such as security vulnerabilities, coordination overhead, and scalability issues are discussed in detail. Additionally, the paper outlines emerging trends and future research directions, including the integration of machine learning, energy harvesting, and cross-layer optimization. The findings suggest that while cooperative routing significantly improves energy efficiency and network sustainability, further advancements are required to address the evolving demands of next-generation wireless networks.
