Abstract

The quest for clean, reliable, and sustainable energy sources is a defining challenge of this time. As the world deals with climate change and growing energy demands, nuclear power stands as a potent, low-carbon solution. Driving this advancement are innovations in nuclear fuel technology, particularly the development of uranium dioxide (UO2) composite materials. These sophisticated fuel forms promise enhanced performance, safety, and efficiency, paving the way for a more robust nuclear energy future. Nuclear power generation hinges on the controlled fission of heavy elements, primarily uranium. Uranium dioxide (UO2) has long been the workhorse fuel in light-water reactors (LWRs) due to its excellent thermal conductivity and chemical stability. However, to meet the demands of advanced reactor designs and to further improve operational safety and fuel utilization, researchers are actively exploring the potential of UO2-based composite materials. This article reviews leveraging UO2composite materials for nuclear power generation. The tailored properties of UO2composites might also open doors to more efficient fuel cycles, including the potential for utilizing recycled nuclear materials or enhancing the performance of fast breeder reactors. Nuclear power, a potent and low-carbon energy source, relies on the controlled fission of atomic nuclei to generate electricity. Here we try to review the study of Nuclear power generation using UO2.
