Design and Experimental Validation of a Frequency-Reconfigurable Microstrip Antenna using PIN Diodes for Multiband RF Communication and Wireless Applications

This study presents the design, fabrication, and experimental validation of a compact frequency-reconfigurable microstrip patch antenna for multiband RF communication systems. The antenna is implemented on an FR-4 substrate and employs multiple PIN diodes integrated within strategically designed slots on the radiating patch to achieve dynamic reconfiguration. By controlling the ON/OFF states of the diodes through an external DC biasing network, the effective surface current distribution is modified, enabling multiple resonant frequency states without altering the antenna geometry. A practical biasing network incorporating RF choke inductors and DC blocking capacitors is used to ensure proper isolation between RF and control signals, minimizing interference and maintaining stable operation. Experimental measurements using a vector network analyzer (VNA) confirm reconfigurable operation across multiple frequency bands with S11 values below −10 dB at the resonant frequencies. The antenna also demonstrates stable radiation characteristics and a gain ranging from 2.5 dBi to 5.8 dBi across different states. The proposed design offers a compact, low-cost, and efficient solution suitable for modern wireless communication systems, including WLAN, LTE, IoT, and sub-6 GHz 5G applications, where multiband capability and frequency agility are essential.
